| 大学精神包涵作为脑力的大学理想和作为心力的大学
意志，有意志方可成就大学这一人为之事。办大学就是意志的
较量。提出这一范畴有其理论意义、学科发展意义和现实意
义。大学发展有赖于关键人物的意志激发组织共同意志的推
动。个人意志转化为组织意志表现为空间上的凝聚与辐射，时
间上的积累与传承。在中国办大学，必须借鉴和复兴中华传统
智慧，以出世的精神做入世的事业；不失大节、不拘小节；至诚
如神、道成肉身；把握机遇、顺势而发。大学主导者要炼就推
动大学发展的道术贯通的本体功夫。 |

On the Will of a University

| We tried to put "the will of a university" as an important concept of the basic theory of higher education
and put it up for discussion. This concept not only has important academic value and practical significance, but also
guides the construction of higher education disciplines and personnel training. This article focuses on the following
issues and presents our insights.
1. The relationship: University will, university ideals, and university spirit
University spirit involves two aspects-- mind and heart ("brain power" and "heart power"). University ideal is
a kind of "brain power" level university spirit, and "heart power" level of university spirit is mainly expressed as
"university will". The university spirit that lacks the will of a university is a "slogan" and university ideals lacking
university will eventually become "fantasy"! University ideal and university will constitute a one-to-one relationship
of yin and yang and a virtual and substantial relationship. It is an interdependent “taiji diagram” of the university spirit.
2. The university will:"positive and negative" and "strong and weak"
University ideals are directions and guidelines. If we cannot "do things" toward university ideals or act on
the "ought" of universities, and our ideas are not right, we will certainly make universities "non-universities”. The
development of a university is to advocate a spirit of displacement and adherence to the ideals of a university. In a
complex and ever-changing environment, it is the will of a university that insist on making selections, choices and
decisions based on the correct university ideals. If so, then it is the will of a university and a good one. If not and lack
of directions, then it is "non-university will", that is, a bad one. It can also be classified as more or less, strong or weak.
Running a university is a contest of will.
3. To run a university: Where there is an “aspiration”, there is its “realization”
In the light of a university ideals, running a university must be aspirant, and "without an aspiration, there is
nothing to be done in the world." Because universities are human facts, not only institutions but also processes. Human
facts are different from man-made things since once a man-made machine is formed, it can run without a will. And the
university, once it is not subject to the idea of a university, will become a non-university. To run a university is always
in the process of the event and will always be on the road. University affairs cannot be done once and for all, and it
must be worked in a meaningful way forever. Just as the work of Sisyphus in the ancient Greek mythology to push
the rock up the mountain was a non-stop work of knowing and doing. The aspiration of the university is to combine
knowledge with practice.
4. University will is the will of key figures’ excitation and resonance of organizational will.
The development of a university depends on the will of key figures inspiring the common will which will promote
the organization. The transformation of individual will into an organization will manifest itself as spatial cohesion
and radiation, accumulation and inheritance in time. The will of the university means such a mental state that-- in the
course of university development, those key people who are rich in the ideals of the university, regardless of whether
they are in the normal or abnormal state of the university, can have a good faith, make a trend, guide the direction,
determine the goal, practice what they have done, build consensus, to work with collective wisdom and concerted
efforts , thus he can continue to promote the continuous development of the school.
Therefore, the will of the university is the will dominated by the idea of a university. It is the will dominated by
the key figures. It is the common will of an organization and the will of inheritance from generation to generation.
The will of a university is "firm and tough" rather than "hard and brittle". It is full of practical wisdom. Running a
university in China, we must learn and revive Chinese traditional wisdom: Use "in-the-world" attitude to do "beyondthe-
world" practice, "mind the major points of conduct" and "neglect the minor points of conduct", sincerity and " ‘Dao’
into ‘the human body’ ", seize the opportunity and take advantage of it. University leaders must develop university by
forming the Gongfu of both Dao and Techniques. |
